Mesothelium in general is the name of various forms of tissue lining organs such as the heart, lungs, abdomen and the reproductive organs. Around the abdominal wall organs is known as the peritoneal membrane. Lining around the lungs is called pleural membrane around the heart wall is called pericardium.

These lining fulfill two functions. They protect the internal organs by producing a liquid lubrication and to allow the smooth movement of internal organs. Thyroid cancers are the cancers affecting these membranes. The names of cancers depend on the tissue or trim their impact. Peritoneal mesothelioma, pleural mesothelioma, and pericardial mesothelioma are the names of cancers lining of the abdomen, lungs and heart, respectively. Thyroid cancer is the most common of all cancers and mesothelioma is found in 70% of patients with mesothelioma. Peritoneal mesothelioma is 10% to 20% of patients that mesothelioma third type pericardial mesothelioma is rare.

Symptoms of mesothelioma cancers are similar to other common diseases. It makes diagnosis of cancer mesothelioma a difficult task. The pain and swelling in the abdomen, weakness, weight loss, loss of appetite and nausea are some of the symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma. Symptoms of pleural mesothelioma are persistent cough, difficulty breathing, weight loss, loss of appetite, weakness, chest pain, pain in the lower back and difficulty swallowing.

History

History cancer mesothelioma goes back as far as 1900. It took about 60 years to gather enough information on these cancer mesothelioma. At the end of the sixth decade of the last century, experts could conclude that exposure to asbestos particles is the reason for the disease. JC Wagner was first researcher to the report of 32 cases of mesothelioma and cancer has confirmed his association with exposure to asbestos.

An alarming fact about cancer mesothelioma is extended its latency period. These cancers may remain asymptomatic in the body of even 50 years. The chances of survival for patients with mesothelioma are scarce and the average length of survival after diagnosis is not more than 12-24 months. Surgery if diagnosed early, chemotherapy and radiotherapy are some treatments for all types of cancer mesothelioma. People suffering from cancer mesothelioma may file in court to recover damages for medical expenses and other damages. They can file lawsuits against individuals and companies responsible for asbestos exposure.
